Fugu contains tetrodotoxin, a neurotoxin up to 1,200 times more potent than cyanide. A single fish can kill 30 people if improperly prepared. Chefs in Japan require years of training and special licenses to serve it safely. Even with precautions, fatalities occur each year, cementing fugu’s reputation as one of the deadliest foods in the world.
