
7. Ackee Fruit
The national fruit of Jamaica is toxic if unripe. Hypoglycin, found in the pink flesh and black seeds, can cause “Jamaican Vomiting Sickness,” leading to nausea, coma, or death. To safely enjoy ackee, it must ripen fully and open naturally on the tree. Only the cream-colored pulp around the seeds is safe to eat, making preparation critical.
