9. Cassava

Cassava is a tropical root used in puddings, chips, and flour, but it contains cyanide if improperly prepared. Sweet cassava is safer and only needs cooking, whereas bitter cassava must be soaked, grated, and cooked thoroughly. Confusing the two can be fatal, and dozens of deaths occur each year from incorrect preparation, making cassava a deceptively dangerous staple.
